What is a Five Year Anniversary Gift?

Five years is the first big milestone when it comes to celebrating a marriage and anniversaries. It is one of the few anniversaries where the traditional gift is the same. This is regardless as to what part of the world you are from. In this case, wood is the symbol for five years. The tradition began with the cutting of a piece of wood on the actual anniversary date. This was for crafting into an article for the lucky wife. Today, there are plenty of gift ideas for a five-year wedding anniversary. Here I offer some suggestions and interesting facts.

Why is Wood the Symbol of the Fifth Anniversary?

For the fifth anniversary, the traditional symbol is wood; a strong, long-lasting and durable material. It signifies the strength of the marriage and indicates a solid relationship. Wood has been in use for many thousands of years, particularly for construction, fuel, furniture, paper and tools. It has also been used as an artistic medium, with the creation of sculptures, panel paintings and carvings. Wood is also a common material for making sports equipment such as cricket bats and musical instruments.

Gift Ideas for the Wooden Anniversary

Wood is such as a common material. It is relatively easy to find gift ideas for a five year wedding anniversary. A personalised wooden plaque would make a thoughtful gift, laser engraved with the couple’s names and date of marriage. If you wish to create memories, rather than offer a gift, a wonderful idea is to send the happy couple on a woodland walk and owl flying experience. A beautiful barn owl will accompany them and land on their leather gloved hands!

For something out of the ordinary, why not consider this wooden dog design table lamp? It operates in many positions and has a dimmer switch, ideal for the bedroom or study. It gives a warm soft glow and is sure to be a talking point for everyone. A cute feature is that the brightness is adjustable to three different levels by simply touching the dog’s head!

Which Flower Represents a Five-Year Wedding Anniversary?

The delicate daisy represents the five-year wedding anniversary and is symbolic of innocence, loyalty and purity. It has an association with these traits as many believe that daisies grow in the earth whenever a child died. Daisies can also symbolise new beginnings and motherhood, which may be appropriate for a couple choosing to start a family after five years of marriage. Their name comes from an old English term of “days eye,” so-called because of the petals of the flower, which close over its pretty yellow centre during the night.

Daisy, Daisy, Give Me Your Answer, Do

The daisy is well represented in songs, poetry and art. The lyrics above actually come from a song called Daisy Bell from 1892 by Harry Dacre and its inspiration comes from the well-known socialist of that time, the Countess of Warwick. The English romantic poet William Wordsworth wrote two poems dedicated to the flower, both called by the same name of To The Daisy in 1815. William Shakespeare had an interest in the flower and represented Ophelia’s innocence in Hamlet with the use of a daisy chain.

Gifts with a Daisy Theme

The daisy is a popular theme for decorating homeware and there is plenty of choice for a suitable gift. A pretty daisy chain glass light catcher looks beautiful in a sunlit window, and the same design is also available as a coaster or trinket bowl. A one of a kind hand decorated wine glass is certainly a statement piece and guaranteed unique. Just to add to the fun, there is a cocktail recipe on the bottom of the glass!

Is There a Gemstone for the Fifth Wedding Anniversary?

The fifth wedding anniversary requires a gift of rose quartz, a pretty pale pink crystal that signifies compassion, forgiveness and unconditional love. It has ceremonial use in love rituals for centuries and is the most romantic of all the gemstones. The ancient Greeks and Romans were the first civilisations to associate rose quartz with love. Prior to that, it was a talisman to denote the agreement of a deal. Ancient Egyptians believed that rose quartz could prevent ageing and wrinkles!

Facts About Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is a naturally occurring crystal available in mines throughout the world, particularly in Brazil, India, Madagascar and South Africa. It is made of silicon dioxide and actually fades in the sun, so needs to be stored carefully. Rose Quartz is also known as Hyaline from a Greek word meaning glass and has at various times in history been called a Bohemian Ruby. It is often used for Feng Shui purposes as chunks of the stone can be left in every room to invite healing and rejuvenation. Rose quartz is also said to promote sleep.

Unusual Gift Ideas

Rose quartz is surprisingly affordable and certainly considered as one of the most romantic of gifts. A tree of life stretch bracelet is very pretty and signifies life peace and grace, and is said to reduce negativity in the wearer. As a change from a jewellery item, you could consider a rose quartz anti-ageing facial roller, designed to reduce puffiness around the eyes. It even comes with a precious individual rose quartz stone.

Finally, the fifth wedding anniversary has been celebrated in style, with the promise of many more happy years together to come. Its now time to settle down and reflect together. Year six is fast approaching, perhaps bringing new challenges, maybe children have now entered the home and the family as a unit is drawing together. 1. Hi Diane,

Great article!  All three were new to me but your descriptions and meanings created a very pretty gift in my head!  I have some wood panels or plaques that I picked up from a craft store.  As a crafter, I would adhere the wedding picture to the piece of wood and maybe attach a small bouquet of dried daisies held together by a rose quartz pendant of some sort.  Such cool ideas stem from articles like this.  Thank you for inspiring me!  Are there similar items for each year of the marriage or is it in only 5-year intervals?

  2. Thanks for the overview and description of some lovely 5 year anniversary gifts. My spouse and I have been married for not quite five years, but we’ve been together for what seems like forever! (It’s actually going on 21 years!) Anniversaries are big deals for us because we had to wait so long before we could tie the knot. Now we celebrate over the course of a week because we married as close to the date that we first met as was possible— over Labor Day Weekend. I think some of the items that you listed as anniversary gifts are beautiful and I am inspired by them to look more closely at the five year anniversary that is coming up.

  3. A 5 year anniversary is an important one, you want to give your significant other something with meaning. A personalised wooden plaque will be a wonderful gift, but you can use it for any other anniversary. However, it shows that you care and that you are putting a lot of thought in the gift. If you combine the plaque with the flowers it can be a great gift.

  4. Very interesting article. I’m glad you shared some ideas for gifts because all I can think about is just a wood plank. The dog lamp is the cutest thing. I didn’t realize there was also a gemstone and flower for each anniversary. My husband is a little behind on gifts! I will share this page with him. :-)I’m going to check out the rose quartz roller. That’s a good idea if you have someone that doesn’t like jewellery. Thanks for the information and gift ideas. I will bookmark your page.

  5. I’m going to be married 42 years so the five-year mark has well passed me by.

But I agree that there are many different gift ideas in wood for the fifth anniversary. Your idea of an owl and woodland walk is nice. I love it!

My wife loves daisies and these are gifts are beautiful. I think she would like them even though it’s not 5 years :-)But I really like the idea of getting her something like a necklace with rose quartz. I think this would be the best choice for me.

Just out of curiosity, what is the theme for a ten year anniversary?

  6. First off, I love the idea behind your website!  I think this is the first time I  have every seen anything dedicated to the “lesser”  anniversaries.  (Not that any anniversary is less than another!)

My wife and I  are coming up on our 25th (Silver I believe)…and we both prefer experiences over material things.  So I was happy to see you had the idea of a walk in a woodland.  Very cool idea!  I think I am going to take that idea, and decorate our woods in white light and shiny silver.

Anyway, great ideas to be found here.  Thanks for the inspiration.
